I was once again absolutely delighted to have been named the 2012
Astronomy Photographer of the Year
on 19 September in a
ceremony at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich in the UK.
The competition received a record amount of entries
since the competition began in 2009, making the win even more valuable to
me. I have to say that the standard of entry was remarkable.
My deep image of the the
Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) won both the deep-sky category and the overall
Competition judge Will Gater said, ‘‘This is arguably
one of the finest images of M51 ever taken by an amateur astronomer. It’s
not just the detail in the spiral arms of the galaxy that’s remarkable –
look closely and you’ll see many, very distant, galaxies in the background
My congratulations also extend to the other winners.
